description In order to guarantee the correct accessibility to documentary resources without forgetting both the protection and conservation of the physical object, cultural institutions have decided to use the current technological tools to undertake digitisation activities and projects, hence ensuring both the protection of and access to the tangible object. One of the first documentary institutions in Spain to opt for the digitisation of its documentary collections as a necessary step for the safeguarding and dissemination of its bibliographic heritage was the Sancho el Sabio Foundation (SSF), the largest and best known documentation and research centre for Basque culture and history. The general aim of this paper is to study and analyse the development and evolution of digitisation of the Sancho el Sabio Foundation's collections through a bibliographical review, not forgetting studies, reports, and pieces of news. The starting point is the work initiated by both the current director and technical director of the SSF, Jesús Manuel Zubiaga Valdivielso and Charo Martínez Díaz de Zugazúa, respectively, as well as the contributions made by the former director of the SSF, Carmen Gómez Pérez. Furthermore, 4 interviews with the heads of the SSF which were conducted regarding both the topics of digitisation and digital preservation at the SSF have been considered. Among the conclusions which were reached, the relevance of institutional support in both the planning and implementation of digitisation and digital preservation projects, as well as the significance and value that the figure of the professional librarian has acquired with the growth of the most innovative technology are particularly remarkable. Moreover, it should not be forgotten that cooperation is the term that determines the present of memory institutions, and specifically that of the Foundation, an objective that leads to and favours the implementation of new technologies.

Para poder garantizar la correcta accesibilidad a los recursos documentales sin exponerse al olvido de la protección y conservación del objeto físico, las instituciones culturales han decidido apostar por las herramientas tecnológicas del momento para emprender actividades y proyectos de digitalización, asegurando así la protección del objeto tangible y el acceso a este. Una de las primeras instituciones documentales en España en apostar por la digitalización de sus fondos documentales como paso necesario para la salvaguarda y difusión de su patrimonio bibliográfico fue la Fundación Sancho el Sabio (FSS), el mayor y más conocido centro de documentación e investigación de la cultura e historia vascas. El objetivo general del trabajo es estudiar y analizar el desarrollo y la evolución de la digitalización de los fondos de la Fundación Sancho el Sabio a través de la revisión bibliográfica, así como de estudios, memorias, informes y noticias. Se han tomado como punto de partida los trabajos iniciados por el actual director y la actual jefe técnico de la FSS, Jesús Manuel Zubiaga Valdivielso y Charo Martínez Díaz de Zugazúa, respectivamente, así como las aportaciones realizadas por la antigua directora de la FSS, Carmen Gómez Pérez, y se han considerado las 4 entrevistas realizadas a sus responsables en torno a la digitalización y la preservación digital en la FSS. Entre las conclusiones alcanzadas, destacan particularmente la importancia del apoyo institucional a la hora de plantear y llevar a cabo proyectos de digitalización y preservación digital, así como la significación y valor que la figura del profesional bibliotecario ha adquirido con el crecimiento de la tecnología más innovadora.
