Domingo de Agirre is considered as the father of the Basque novel. "Garoa" (1912) was his third and the last novel. Apart from being a customary novel set in a farm environment, beyond all that and related to the customs and farming the ideology also takes an important role in the novel. In fact, it is a thesis novel. Throughout the article those ideological elements are analysed both if they are said or kept in silence. The integrist religion, the bucolic balance of the farm, the Basque and the traditional habits, and the anti modernist approach would be part of those categories. Domingo de Agirre es considerado como el padre de la novela en euskara. "Garoa" (1912) fue su tercera y última novela. Se trata de una novela costumbrista y ruralista, pero bajo estos adjetivos se esconde una novela de enorme calado ideológico. Es una novela de tesis. A lo largo del artículo se procuran analizar esos elementos ideológicos bien por lo que dijo o por lo que calló. El integrismo religioso, la armonía bucólica del caserío, la defensa del euskara y de las costumbres tradicionales, y su antimodernismo serían algunas de esas categorías.
